Evergreen Tree Planting Guide

Proper planting is the key to healthy growth and long-lasting evergreen trees. Follow these simple instructions to ensure strong root development and successful establishment.

1. Choose the Right Location

  • Select a site with full sun to partial shade, depending on the evergreen variety.
  • Ensure the soil is well-draining and avoid areas where water pools after rainfall.
  • Clear grass, weeds, and debris from the planting area.

2. Dig the Planting Hole

  • Dig a hole 2 - 3 times wider than the root ball.
  • The depth should allow the root flare (where the trunk meets the roots) to sit at or slightly above ground level.
  • Loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole to encourage root growth.

3. Place the Tree in the Hole

  • Carefully place the evergreen tree in the center of the hole.
  • Gently spread roots if they are not container-bound.
  • Make sure the tree is standing straight before filling the hole.

4. Backfill the Soil

  • Refill the hole using the original soil removed during digging.
  • Lightly press soil to eliminate air pockets without compacting it.
  • Do not bury the trunk deeper than the root flare.

5. Water Thoroughly

  • Water deeply immediately after planting to settle the soil.
  • Keep soil consistently moist during the first growing season.
  • Increase watering frequency during hot or dry weather.

6. Apply Mulch

  • Apply a 2 - 3 inch layer of mulch around the base of the tree.
  • Keep mulch a few inches away from the trunk to prevent rot.
  • Mulch helps retain moisture and regulate soil temperature.

7. Staking

  • Stake only if the tree is tall, top-heavy, or planted in windy areas.
  • Use soft ties and allow slight movement for natural root development.
  • Remove stakes after one growing season.

8. Ongoing Care

Watering

  • First year: Deep watering once or twice per week.
  • After establishment: Water only during extended dry periods.

Fertilizing

  • Do not fertilize immediately after planting.
  • Apply a balanced evergreen fertilizer the following spring if needed.

Pruning

  • Remove only dead or damaged branches during the first year.
  • Light shaping can be done in future seasons.
